Canon imagePROGRAF iPF Error Code 03130031-291B

Canon imagePROGRAF iPF Hardware Error 03130031-291B

Hardware error 03130031-291B can end in a few different ways.  If you are reading this, you've come to the right place for answers!  Your Canon imagePROGRAF iPF large format printer is not doomed, but this may be an involved repair.... let's read.

Oh, and I won't just give you bad news.  There is good news too... I'm here to help (if that helps at all).

What The Code Means

The 291B error is a lift shift timeout error.  In geek-speak, a lift operation has been executed but no sensor has been detected or a sensor has remained detected.  WHAT?  Ok, I'm going to do this again, a little slower.  The carriage cannot travel to the lift drive position.  This means the lift drive cam is not engaged, you have a faulty lift drive sensor or a faulty lift drive motor.

Seriously, this might be an easy fix or a very involved fix.

The Fix

If you are lucky, a simple reboot (or power cycle, for nerds like me) will fix the problem.  Turn the printer off, wait a few moments, then turn the power back on.

If the error clears, it's your lucky day!  If the error comes back, it's time to make some decisions.

Option 1

Locate/Hire a Canon Authorized Service Technician to make the repairs for you. This will likely be an expensive option, but at least the work will be done correctly. Some models are no longer supported by Canon. In those cases, you will have to find an independent servicer (which will be even more expensive) or you will have to attempt the repair on your own)

In the event that you are going to attempt a repair on your own, be sure to unplug the printer from the power source, and use extreme caution. You are working with an electronic device that is capable of inflicting bodily harm. If you are not experienced with electronics, we strongly recommend you hire a professional.

Option 2

Purchase a new printer

Consider the cost of the parts, plus the cost/time needed to make the repair. If repair costs look more appealing than the price of a new printer, consider the age of the printer. Older printers, or "legacy" models, may no longer be supported by newer computers and current operating systems.

In many cases, a brand new printer is a better choice.
