Canon imagePROGRAF iPF Hardware Error 03130031-2F20
Hardware error 03130031-2F20 is the cap motor cam positioning error. If you've come here hoping for good news, today is your lucky day. The service manual says this one should be an easy fix.
What The Code Means
For those that want to know, the 2F20 error means the recovery system has been driven buy no sensor interrupt occurs. The recovery system has been driven to close the cap, but the cap has not been capped successfully.
This is one case where a simple reboot should solve the problem. Please make sure nothing is preventing the carriage from properly docking. Lifting the upper cover will allow you to see if there are any obstructions. Improper power cycles can cause much larger problems.
Once you are certain the carriage is in the proper position, power down the printer. Wait a few moments, then turn the power back on.
If the error clears, all is normal. If the error comes back, you have a few options.
If the power cycle didn't work, repairing the printer may not be the way to go for this issue (please see option 2 for an explanation). However, if you do want to attempt a repair, we recommend contacting a Canon Authorized Service Technician. In our experience, this is the option with the highest success rate.
We recommend finding an independent servicer for models that are no longer supported by Canon. Your last resort should be an attempt making the repair yourself.
Make sure the power supply has been disconnected before attempting any repairs on your own. Electronic devices are capable of causing injury, death, or further damage to the printer. We strongly recommend hiring a professional If you are not experienced with electronics.
If the reboot did not work, this has the potential to be a very costly repair. Since the service manual recommends a reboot (and no other information) you will spend a lot of time "chasing" it. This requires replacing parts that may not need to be replaced, but they have to be ruled out as being the problem. You may find yourself spending more in parts and repairs with no guarantee of success than the cost of a new printer with a new warranty.
In case you aren't aware, newer computers and operating systems don't always support older printer models. So your newly repaired, old printer might not work with a computer you buy in 2 years.
